Big announcement!!

So proud of my 4th graders!!

Thursday, August 23, 2012

I'm proud to report that our total book count for fourth grade is already over 60!  Once I add in the books completed today and tomorrow, we should be at 70!  That's a HUGE accomplishment!  I'm so proud of all of the students!
Please remember that they must read 20 minutes a night.  The comment/question/connection section of the reading log is not optional.  When I grade the reading log, that is what I pay the closest attention to!  Your child should be writing at least 3 sentences in that box.
Don't forget that the weekend reading is a TOTAL of 40 minutes, it does not have to be 40 minutes each day!
We are finishing a Patricia Polacco author study tomorrow, and will begin different reading stories next week.
Teams A and B will be studying a passage from Because Of Winn Dixie, Team C will begin a novel study on Number The Stars.  Each team will have a test on Friday.

Update

Reading homework tonight is 20 minutes of reading and the reading log.

I am so very proud of all of my fourth graders!  We are keeping track of the books that we finish reading either at home or during independent reading time at school.  The count as of this afternoon was over 30!  That's a great start to the year!

We've been discussing text connections this week.  Students are looking for the four connections we have discussed in their reading time:

1.  Text to self-  Connecting the text to life or personal experience.
2.  Text to text-  Connecting the text to another text.
3.  Text to world-  Connecting the text to events in the real world.
4.  Text to media-  Connecting the text to tv, movies, computer, or song.

I have sent a book order home with your students.  This is a great way to promote reading at home, by allowing your children to choose books from the order form.  You can order online or by sending the order form with cash/check (made out to scholastic) to Ms. Sheehan.  The order will be placed on August 28th.

Friday!!

We have had a successful first two days of school!  We are looking forward to having Mrs. Michael back with us on Monday!  :)
We know it's an adjustment to get back in to our school routine; but with instruction starting right at 8 am, we need to make sure we are all getting enough sleep (teachers included!)
All homework is recorded in the agenda, we ask that you sign it nightly.  It is our best form of communication with you!  :)

Weekend reading homework:
Read for a total of 40 minutes the entire weekend.  (You don't have to read all in one sitting, the 40 minutes can be broken up over the three nights!)

See you bright and early Monday morning!!
